Hiring a campervan or motorhome for the first time is one of those decisions people put off for years — and then immediately wonder why they waited so long. There’s something uniquely freeing about having your home on wheels: the ability to stop wherever looks good, wake up somewhere new, and change your plans on a whim with no hotel checkout to worry about.

At Adventure Nomad, we’re a small family-run hire business based at Marsh Farm in Hilperton Marsh, just outside Trowbridge in Wiltshire. We’ve been helping first-timers and seasoned road-trippers hire motorhomes since 2023, and Wiltshire turns out to be one of the best possible places in England to start an adventure. Here’s everything you need to know.

Campervan vs Motorhome: What’s the Difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, and for good reason — there’s no strict legal distinction. In practice, “campervan” tends to refer to smaller converted vans (like a VW Transporter), while “motorhome” usually means a larger, purpose-built vehicle with a proper kitchen, shower room, and more sleeping space. Both are driven on a standard UK driving licence.

Our fleet sits in the motorhome category — proper, fully self-contained vehicles with everything you need to live comfortably on the road for days or weeks at a time. No camping cooking set up on the floor of a van; proper beds, a full kitchen, a bathroom, and heating.

Our Motorhomes: Which Is Right for You?

Where Can You Go from Trowbridge?

One of the great things about picking up a motorhome in Trowbridge is the location. Wiltshire sits at the heart of southern England, putting you within easy reach of some genuinely spectacular destinations — most within two to three hours’ drive.

The Jurassic Coast, Dorset

Head south from Trowbridge and within two hours you can be parked up overlooking the Jurassic Coast — 95 miles of UNESCO World Heritage coastline taking in dramatic cliffs at Lyme Regis, the natural arch at Durdle Door, and the shingle spit at Chesil Beach. Dorset has excellent motorhome-friendly campsites dotted along the coast, and the roads are a genuine pleasure to drive.

Wales — Pembrokeshire & the Brecon Beacons

Wales is one of the most popular destinations for our hirers. From Trowbridge, the M4 gets you into Wales within an hour, and from there the whole country opens up. Pembrokeshire has some of the finest coastal scenery in the UK — surf beaches, sea stacks, and cliff paths that you’ll have mostly to yourself outside of peak summer. The Brecon Beacons (now Bannau Brycheiniog) offer wild moorland, waterfalls, and proper stargazing away from light pollution.

The Cotswolds

If you want something gentler and closer to home, the Cotswolds are barely 40 minutes from Trowbridge. Honey-stone villages, rolling hills, and proper country pubs make this one of the most consistently satisfying short breaks you can do in a motorhome. Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, Chipping Campden — all wonderful, and all much better appreciated from a motorhome than a succession of overpriced B&Bs.

Cornwall & Devon

For longer breaks of a week or more, Cornwall and Devon are hard to beat. The drive down from Wiltshire takes around three hours, and once there you have extraordinary variety — from the rugged north Cornish coast at Tintagel and Newquay to the calmer, wooded estuaries of the south coast around Fowey and Salcombe. Take your time; there’s no rush when the motorhome is your home.

Closer to Home: Wiltshire & the Surrounding Area

Don’t overlook Wiltshire itself, either. Stonehenge and Avebury are on your doorstep. The Vale of Pewsey is beautiful walking country. Lacock — one of England’s best-preserved medieval villages — is 20 minutes from Marsh Farm. And the New Forest is less than an hour away, with outstanding cycling, walking, and wildlife.

Do You Need Experience to Drive a Motorhome?

A standard UK driving licence is all you need — no special category or extra test required for any of our motorhomes. If you’ve driven a car, you can drive a motorhome. They’re wider and longer than you’re used to, but that becomes intuitive very quickly.

Before you leave Marsh Farm, Juley gives everyone a full handover — typically 40 to 60 minutes. This covers:

Most people are surprised how straightforward it all is. By the time you pull out of the farm gate, you’ll feel ready.

What’s Included in the Hire?

Our motorhomes are fully equipped — you genuinely only need to bring yourself, your clothes, and your food. Everything else is provided:

We also offer a range of optional add-ons — from folding chairs and a camping table to an awning tent, BBQ, fire pit, and our popular welcome hamper bundles which are waiting on board when you pick up.

Tips for Your First Motorhome Holiday

A few things we always share with first-timers that make a real difference:

Can You Take Our Motorhomes to Europe?

Yes — EU travel is available on application. There is an additional supplement and some extra paperwork involved, and we ask that you contact us in advance so we can make sure everything is in order. Please note that from October 2026, UK travellers heading to EU countries will also need an ETIAS travel authorisation — a simple online application, but worth sorting before you go.

Want Something Different? Combine a Motorhome with a Canal Boat

We’re the only hire company in Wiltshire that offers both a narrowboat and a fleet of motorhomes from the same base. If you fancy something truly different, our combination holidays let you spend part of your break on the Kennet & Avon Canal in narrowboat Upsy Daisy and the rest on the road in a motorhome — two completely different ways of travelling, one brilliant holiday.
