The number one thing that holds people back from hiring a canal boat is the assumption that you need to know what you’re doing first. You don’t. In three years of running narrowboat hire from our base at Marsh Farm in Trowbridge, we’ve welcomed complete beginners every single week — couples who’ve never set foot on a boat, families who’ve only ever watched canal programmes on the telly, people in their seventies doing something completely new for the first time. Without exception, they’ve loved it.

If you’re curious about canal boat hire on the Kennet & Avon Canal but not sure what to expect, this guide is for you. We’ll walk through where you can go, what the handover involves, what to pack, and how locks actually work — so you arrive feeling excited rather than anxious.

What is the Kennet & Avon Canal?

The Kennet & Avon Canal is one of England’s most beautiful waterways. It runs for 87 miles from Reading in the east to Bristol in the west, passing through the heart of Wiltshire along the way. For much of its length it cuts through open countryside — fields, meadows, and woodland — with market towns, canal-side pubs, and historic locks dotted along the route.

Our narrowboat Upsy Daisy is moored at Marsh Farm in Hilperton Marsh, just outside Trowbridge — right on the canal’s edge. From here you’re perfectly placed to explore in either direction: east towards Bradford-on-Avon and Devizes, or west towards Bath.

Where Can You Go from Trowbridge?

The great thing about starting from Hilperton is that you have genuinely interesting destinations in both directions within easy reach, even on a short hire.

East: Bradford-on-Avon, Devizes & Caen Hill

Heading east from our mooring, within an hour or two you’ll reach Bradford-on-Avon — a gorgeous market town with an ancient tithe barn, independent shops, and excellent canal-side pubs. It’s one of the most satisfying short cruises on the whole canal and well worth making your first stop.

Continue east and you’ll reach Devizes, a bustling market town famous for Caen Hill Locks — a flight of 29 locks rising 237 feet, listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways. Working your way up (or down) the flight is one of those genuinely memorable experiences that people talk about for years. It takes a few hours but it’s never boring, and there’s a wonderful pub waiting at the bottom.

West: Towards Bath

Go west from Trowbridge and the canal winds through the Limpley Stoke Valley, one of the most picturesque sections of the whole waterway. The route towards Bath passes through wooded valley sides, across an impressive aqueduct at Avoncliff, and through the handsome village of Freshford. Bath itself is about 12 miles from our mooring — reachable on longer hires of 5 days or more.

Do I Need Experience to Hire a Canal Boat?

No licence is required to hire a narrowboat in the UK, and you genuinely don’t need any prior experience. Canal boats move at a maximum of 4mph — walking pace — which gives you plenty of time to think and react. Steering becomes natural very quickly.

Before you set off, Juley will give you a thorough hands-on handover at the mooring. This typically takes 40–60 minutes and covers:

By the end of the handover, you’ll feel ready. Most people are surprised how straightforward it is.

What Are Locks — and Are They Difficult?

Locks are the system that allows canal boats to travel up and down hills. They work by enclosing the boat in a chamber and then raising or lowering the water level. They look complicated from the outside but they’re genuinely straightforward once you’ve done one or two.

On the Kennet & Avon, the locks are wide locks (as opposed to the narrower locks on some other canals), which means they’re spacious and easy to manoeuvre into. We’ll teach you how they work during your handover, and most guests feel completely confident after their first lock.

One person steers the boat in, while the other works the lock from the towpath. It’s a nice bit of teamwork and quickly becomes one of the highlights of the trip.
